Digital Health and Aging Research Take Center Stage at 2026 International Parkinson’s Congress

The biggest annual gathering of Parkinson’s disease researchers is giving us an early look at where the field is headed over the next ten years. The 2026 International Congress of Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders will feature hundreds of new research presentations, but the newly released program already points to a clear direction: Parkinson’s care is becoming more digital, more personalized, and more focused on how aging itself affects the disease.

The congress runs October 4 to 8 in Seoul, South Korea, bringing together thousands of neurologists, scientists, rehab specialists, and other healthcare professionals from around the world. This year’s theme, “Understanding Aging in Movement Disorders,” reflects a growing shift in thinking, Parkinson’s isn’t just about losing brain cells that produce dopamine. Researchers are increasingly looking at how the aging process itself affects when Parkinson’s starts, how it progresses, how well treatments work, and what complications show up along the way.

One of the biggest themes in the program is the growing role of digital health tools. A dedicated session will cover how wearable devices, remote monitoring, telehealth visits, and objective measurements of walking and balance are starting to change how Parkinson’s is treated. Researchers will also discuss new deep brain stimulation devices that can collect information from inside the brain while they’re delivering therapy.

This focus on digital, objective measurement matters because researchers have increasingly questioned whether the standard clinical rating scales are sensitive enough to catch subtle changes in the disease or measure whether new treatments are actually working. Tools like wearable sensors, eye tracking, smartphone apps, and AI are becoming a bigger part of that conversation.

Cognitive changes will also get major attention. One session will look at the full range of thinking related symptoms in Parkinson’s, from mild changes to full blown dementia, and how brain imaging, genetics, and biomarkers are helping researchers understand what’s happening. The session will also cover current and upcoming treatments aimed at protecting memory and thinking skills and improving quality of life.

Nonmotor symptoms, the ones that aren’t tremor or stiffness, will get serious airtime too. Sleep problems, fatigue, pain, blood pressure and digestion issues, depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline affect just as many patients as the movement symptoms do. A full session devoted to these symptoms shows how central they’ve become to Parkinson’s care, not just an afterthought.

Environmental causes are another major focus. A session on the “Parkinson’s Disease Exposome” will look at how things people are exposed to over a lifetime, toxins and other environmental factors, might raise the risk of developing Parkinson’s. Researchers will also discuss the connection between the gut and the brain, and how hard it is to actually measure someone’s lifetime of environmental exposure.

Treatment discussions will go well beyond medication. Sessions on both early and advanced Parkinson’s will cover care that involves whole teams of specialists, infusion therapies, surgery, and new technologies to help patients manage symptoms at every stage. Other sessions will focus on related but less common conditions like progressive supranuclear palsy and multiple system atrophy, conditions that haven’t historically gotten as much research attention as Parkinson’s itself.

The congress is also using technology to make itself more accessible. Every session will have live captions generated by AI and translated into more than 60 languages, so attendees from anywhere in the world can follow along in real time.

The program preview lays out the general themes, but many of the meeting’s biggest stories haven’t been announced yet. The congress will include presentations and last minute research reveals, the kind that often bring new clinical trial results and experimental treatments to light before they’re published in medical journals.

Overall, the program suggests Parkinson’s research is entering a new phase. Instead of focusing mainly on replacing lost dopamine or treating movement symptoms, scientists are increasingly working toward better objective measurement tools, more personalized treatments, earlier diagnosis, and a deeper understanding of how aging shapes the disease. Those themes will likely drive many of the conversations, and maybe some major breakthroughs, when the Parkinson’s community gathers in Seoul this October.
