Environmental exposures are increasingly being investigated as possible contributors to Parkinson’s disease. Research suggests that certain toxicants—including agricultural pesticides like paraquat, industrial solvents such as trichloroethylene (TCE), and polluted air containing fine particulate matter—may damage dopamine-producing neurons through mechanisms like oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction. Scientists now believe that many cases of Parkinson’s may arise from a complex interaction between genetics and environmental factors, with long-term exposure to chemicals in agriculture, industry, and urban pollution emerging as important areas of investigation. This growing body of evidence has also sparked legal battles, public-health debates, and calls for stronger environmental protections as researchers work to better understand how the modern environment may influence the development of neurodegenerative diseases.
